As the holiday season approaches we wait for the good deals to arrive and HTC has opened the goody bag with a great deal on the HTC VIVE. Many speculate this is HTC’s answer to the 2nd Oculus Rift price drop in the course of a year. No matter the driving force, this VIVE price cut is amazing news for VR porn users.
Usually retailing with a hefty price tag that can go as high as $800 USD, HTC has massively discounted the VIVE system by $200, bringing the cost of the system down to $599. It’s a massive discount and designed to stimulate consumer interest in the HTC VIVE system as well as make it more affordable to try out some of the VIVE accessories like the VIVE Tracker that’s been available with the VIVE since early this year.
Purchasing an HTC Vive right now will also get you a one-month free trial to HTC’s Viveport subscription service, which will allow you to access a wide selection of VR games.
This significant price drop reflects the Oculus Rift’s similar price drop that occurred in March and took the price of the Rift down by $200 to a reasonable $499 USD, a price that’s been slashed further during the “Summer of Rift” to a whopping $399 USD.
VIVE Price Cut – Good News for Consumers
While for many a $599 price tag is still somewhat hefty, VIVE US general manager Dan O’Brien has promised that the current generation VIVE won’t be disappearing anytime soon. They expect the current version of the VIVE to still be on the market well into 2018, so consumers don’t have to worry that the price drop is about getting rid of stock and that they’ll be left with a useless device in a short period. And with a plethora of accessories, like wireless adapters, head straps, and others, users will be able to upgrade without feeling like they’re being upsold into new hardware. To date, HTC has worked on improving the current hardware, for example they’ve upgraded the VIVE’s cable system, without requiring a new generation of hardware, and O’Brien notes that it’s this kind of iterative design that will probably continue for some time.
While the new, discounted price is good news for many it won’t affect the VIVE special Business Edition package, which is aimed primarily at commercial enterprises and arcades. At $1200 USD O’Brien says that these special commercial editions only make up a minority of the VIVE sales, but of course they’re still an essential and substantial part of the HTC business plan, especially in China where HTC estimates that there’s a VIVE in up to 70% of the 4500 arcades across the country.
The HTC VIVE has been a top choice for hardcore VR enthusiasts since its launch. after all it can require an intense setup process and may seem somewhat clunky to beginners, the discounts that HTC are offering make it a worthwhile option to consider. If you’ve balked at the $800 USD price tag this recent price drop may be exactly what you’ve been waiting for, especially if you’ve been trying to decide between the Rift and the VIVE.
